Economic and Efficient Electrolytic Hydrogen production (2017 – 2021)

EEEHy project targets cost-efficient, large-scale storage of electricity as hydrogen produced by high-temperature, high-pressure, alkaline electrolysis. Electrolytic hydrogen production is a key technology for the transition to a 100% sustainable electricity system where intermittent energy sources like solar and wind will play major role, as it enables storage of surplus electricity while providing a crucial link between the renewable electricity grid and the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals. Electrolysis has the potential to utilize surplus electricity for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen at the scale needed for grid balancing. Hydrogen is an excellent energy-storage medium that allows for conversion back to electricity in periods with deficient power generation. Alternatively, the hydrogen can be used for production of sustainable fuels or chemicals, or sold directly on the industrial H2 market. Scientifically, the EEEHy project is addressing improved electrocatalysts, electrodes and interconnects, scaled production of electrolysis cells, design and construction of stacks, plus validation and demonstration of a small electrolysis system. The envisioned commercialization will be prepared for by a technology development plan and a product rollout strategy. The project targets to raise the technology readiness level from 2 to 5.
